Ashley Farley Nell and Lady Heartbreakingly Beautiful Family Love and Forgiveness

Nell and Lady by author Ashley Farley is a wonderfully realistic look at how life among family and friends can go off-track quickly and with heartbreaking results, irregardless of a deep familial love. Willa Bellemore of Charleston has a daughter named Lady, and she had agreed to care for her beloved friend/cooks' daughter, Nell. As Willa, Lady, and Nell enjoy a loving home together, attitudes subtly change as the two girls become teenagers. On the night of Lady's sixteenth birthday, Nell is secretly assaulted and mistreated by a guest because of her race. Nell chooses to keep this secret but it creates an unfortunate resentment in her heart and mind toward all Caucasians, even Willa and Lady who love her and do not understand what has happened. When Nell withdraws herself away from the Bellemore's and lets them know she does not want any further contact with them, Lady becomes angry and Willa is heartbroken. As is so often the case in coincidences, Lady's daughter and Nell's son are best friends at school with no idea of what has happened in the past.
Nell and Lady is a very carefully and respectfully written story about how race differences and privilege or the lack thereof can have long-range effects for families.
