Christmas at Mossy Creek by author Carolyn McSparren with contributing authors Martha Crockett, Susan Goggins, Darcy Crowder, Maureen Hardegree, and Nancy Knight.
Christmas season brings the fans of Mossy creek a wonderful mix of stories to enjoy. It seemed for each event during the holiday season, they were in need of someone to take their beloved Ed Brady’s place as the community Santa. Magic is in the air at Mossy Creek and there was always a mysterious fellow who enjoyed coming to their rescue to fill in for Santa Claus.
I laughed out loud several times while reading about the Mossy Creek Parade. Oh, the problems with the little donkey Don Qui who had never allowed a person to ride on his back. Kristin, a teenage cheerleader plans to tame him in time to ride him in the parade. During one of their unsuccessful practice sessions, Kristen gets slammed onto her hands and knees. As she looks the little donkey in the eye she says, “Let’s try that again…We’re about to have us a goat rodeo.” Yes, I choked on my tea as I read the about all the bucking and braying from the little donkey. The whole parade endeavor is beset with unexpected problems.
‘The Christmas Competition’ between Mossy Creek and Bigelow has Grandma Inez and Lucy Belle scrambling to find a theme for Mossy Creek that will surpass the extravaganza that Ardaleen has planned for Bigelow. The competition gets fierce among the ladies as the time for the judging to take place draws closer. And the evening of the light show….you just have to read…It is so funny!
There are some very tender moments and events during our Christmas season in Mossy Creek. The scenes in ‘You Get What You Give’ at the Mossy Creek Books and Whatnots is about the love and relationships between sisters Pearl and Spiva. Pearl was willing to sacrifice the things she held most dear in order to express her love for her sister.
‘Miracle on Main Street’ has Jayne, the owner of The Naked Bean, very wary of Kris Kringle who has come into town with his jolly spirit. Jayne does not believe in Christmas anymore and will protect her young son Matt from being influenced by Santa Claus and Christmas promises. She has to learn to accept “That’s what childhood is all about - Possibility.” Jayne needs a whole cookie full of faith!
‘Joyeux Noelle’ is another sweet story about family. Giselle is feeding the sweet five-week-old twins thinking her life is wonderful until later a call comes for Tag which crushes her world. She will have a hard decision to make which affects not only her personal life with Tag, but also her business, Moonheart.
‘Secret Santa’ HeyDay Hayden has never kept a secret from his wife, Tiny. They love and respect each other and have always had unspoken trust for each other. But HayDay has a secret…a big one and he has to keep the secret from Tiny. It is killing him! The secret is one of the very best things Tiny could ever receive, but how will he make it and not spill it until the time is right?
‘Harry’s Christmas Surprise’ gives us more information about the mysterious little guy who is staying at a cabin in the woods. The cabin belongs to Harry Rutherford, the only many with a Ph.D. in Mossy Creek. Although he has felt a bit of an outsider among the mountain people at times, his love for Josie is his life. Josie is expecting their first child in January, but Harry worries at the frantic pace she keeps as she decorates some of the homes and businesses of Mossy Creek. Someone special tells Harry, “Christmas Surprises are the best”.
Enjoy the Laughter and Love, Merry Christmas!
