Detectives King and Lane Book 2, The First One To Die by author Victoria Jenkins ...Very Good!

The First One To Die- Detectives King and Lane Book 2, by author Victoria Jenkins is a wonderful follow-up to the previous Girls In The Water. Each book can be read as a stand alone mystery and suspense even though the books are written as a new series.
Detective Inspector Alex King and Detective Constable Chloe Lane are investigating a call about a young university student who has fallen to her death from a ledge of her bedroom window in the wee hours of the morning. When DI King sees the chaos at the scene and notes the hours from the time of the accident and the request for a DI she is appalled at the incompetence of the first officers and how the gathering of evidence has been compromised. The first responders and officers assume it was an accidental fall from a ledge where student Keira North often sat. The house is shared by Keira and her housemates, Leah Cross, Tom Stoddard, and Jamie Bateman…. The party had gotten out of hand and the house had been filled with drunken students all weekend. Tom and Leah both had been outside on the patio and Jamie was not at the house when the event occurred. Alex learns that an argument was heard coming from Keira’s bedroom just minutes before her fall. There is evidence of a broken liquor bottle which had been thrown against the wall. What really happened in Keira’s room? It all seems suspicious to Alex and she is going to investigate the death further, especially when she learns that Keira was five months pregnant.
A day later across town in hospital another young woman is struggling for her life. Amy Barker had taken a new party drug which was making the rounds among teenagers at one of the clubs for under eighteens. The ‘party smarties’, a drug which has Ecstasy and high volumes of caffeine had caused a reaction resulting in a high fever and kidney failure with possible brain damage. Who is distributing this drug to these young teenagers?
The book is well written and the suspense begins to build as more people are brought into the suspicious death of Keira North. Is there a connection to the drug distribution in the clubs with any of the people who were associated with the four housemates? The name of Professor Leighton Matthews begins to pop up in association to Keira, Leah, and other young women from the campus!
The stress is continuing to mount as Alex deals with more than her job. Her mother is dying which leaves a lifetime of unresolved misunderstandings. Enjoy!
